WA Police recorded 62 burglaries in Greenfields in 2025, less than half the 129 recorded in 2021, a fall of 51.9%. The longer view points the same way, with 143 in 2017. Like every suburb figure, the count includes homes and businesses.

Using the 2021 Census population of 9,869, the 2025 count gives a rate of 6.3 per 1,000 residents. That is about one and a half times the metropolitan Perth rate of 4.0, so even after the fall Greenfields sits above the metro level.

Roller shutters do one practical job: they put a physical barrier on windows and doors and make forced entry slower and noisier. Treat them as one layer, next to deadlocks, sensor lights and an alarm.

Separate houses made up 77.6% of the 4,053 occupied dwellings at the 2021 Census, close to the Greater Perth figure of 77.8%. Another 21.9% were semi-detached, row or terrace houses and townhouses, and 0.6% were flats. Home ownership was 64.1%, below 70.4% for Greater Perth.

Free standing houses suit residential roller shutters, usually bedrooms first. For a townhouse or villa in a strata scheme, check before ordering: the default conduct by-law says an owner must not keep anything visible from outside the lot that is not in keeping with the rest of the building without the strata company's written consent. Landgate adds that strata approval is in addition to any development and building approvals.

Courtyards and alfrescos can take Slidetrack, Ziptrak, cafe or motorised blinds. The name Greenfields itself comes from Greenfields Estate, a promotional developer's name used for the area in 1980.

Greenfields is in the City of Mandurah, and no City planning finding applies to shutters on its homes. For a single house, state planning rules mean no development approval is needed when the R-Codes apply, the work meets their deemed-to-comply provisions and the place is not heritage protected.

Townhouse owners have more to do. Besides the appearance by-law, the default by-laws require 14 days written notice to the strata company before altering the structure of a lot, and the strata company may refuse a structural change that is visible from outside and not in keeping with the development.

With 28.4% of residents aged 65 or over, the WA Seniors Card Safety and Security Rebate is worth checking. It covers security window screens or window shutters, up to $400 per household.
