Roller shutters Golden Bay

WA Police figures for Golden Bay show 48 burglaries in 2017, 43 in 2021, 41 in 2024 and 24 in 2025. Over the five years from 2021 that is a fall of 44.2%, and most of it came in the last year, when the count dropped by 41.5%.

The 2025 count equals 4.2 per 1,000 residents, roughly level with the metropolitan Perth rate of 4.0 and a shade above it. Burglary is reported as one suburb total that takes in homes and businesses alike.

So what can a shutter do? Rolled down, it is a physical barrier on windows and doors. It makes forced entry slower and noisier, and it keeps the glass of a sliding door or a low window out of reach.

Golden Bay's housing is almost entirely detached. The 2021 Census counted 96.8% of occupied dwellings as separate houses, compared with 77.8% for Greater Perth, plus 2.0% townhouses and no flats. Home ownership was 73.7%, and 14.8% of homes were owned outright.

The City of Rockingham's development applications page states that a single house, including patio additions, does not require development approval on residential zoned land. State planning law puts conditions on that exemption: the R-Codes must apply, the work must meet their deemed-to-comply provisions, and the place must not be heritage protected.

For places on the City's Heritage List, its heritage policy allows general maintenance and minor like-for-like work without development approval, but says awnings and similar structures must not affect how the place presents to the street.

WA Seniors Card members can claim up to $400 under the state Safety and Security Rebate, which lists security window screens or window shutters as an eligible item.
