Roller shutters Lakelands

Burglaries in Lakelands have barely moved in five years. WA Police counted 23 in 2021 and 24 in 2025, and no year in between went above 29. Suburb figures combine homes and businesses, so that count includes both.

Divided by the 2021 Census population of 6,171, the 24 burglaries of 2025 give a rate of 3.9 per 1,000 residents, about level with the metropolitan Perth rate of 4.0. Lakelands has grown since the census, by an estimated 21.7% to 2025, so a steady count is now spread across more people and the published rate overstates it a little. Motor vehicle thefts were low too, at 6 in 2021 and 2 in 2025.

A level figure is still a reason some owners add a layer. A roller shutter is a physical barrier on windows and doors. Closed, it makes forced entry slower and noisier, and it works alongside deadlocks, sensor lighting and an alarm rather than in place of them.

The 2021 Census counted 2,119 occupied dwellings in Lakelands. Of those, 99.2% were separate houses and 0.3% were townhouses, with no flats at all, so strata consent seldom comes up. Home ownership was 75.0%, above 70.4% for Greater Perth.

Lakelands is wholly within the City of Mandurah. For a single house, state planning rules exempt works such as shutters from development approval when three conditions hold: the R-Codes apply, the work meets their deemed-to-comply provisions, and the place is not heritage protected.

The City document that does mention security fittings here is the Lakelands Town Centre Precinct Structure Plan (August 2022). It says that, where provided, security screens and grills are to be designed to be integral to the architecture of the development. That rule is for development in the town centre, so it concerns shop and business owners weighing up commercial roller shutters rather than householders.

Seniors Card members can claim up to $400 through the WA Seniors Card Safety and Security Rebate, which lists security window screens or window shutters among its eligible items.
