Secret Harbour burglaries below the metro rate
Start with the rate. In 2025 Secret Harbour had 2.6 burglaries for every 1,000 residents, well below the metropolitan Perth rate of 4.0. Behind that rate is a count of 32, one combined figure for homes and businesses.
The direction is down. WA Police recorded 43 burglaries in 2021, and the yearly count sat between 43 and 48 for the next three years before dropping to 32 in 2025. That is a fall of 25.6% over the five years. Against 2017, when the count was 76, it is 57.9% lower.
A low rate is not the same as no risk. Roller shutters give windows and doors a physical barrier, and they make forced entry slower and noisier.

The 2021 Census offers a rough guide to how many Secret Harbour households may work away. Mining employed 9.6% of working residents, against 6.6% for Greater Perth. The census does not record fly-in fly-out work, so the mining share is only a proxy. It is also a young suburb: 6.4% of residents were 65 or over, well under the Greater Perth figure of 15.8%, and the median age was 34.
A schedule is the simplest way to keep an empty house looking normal. Motorised shutters can be set to open and close at fixed times each day, and a WiFi hub lets you override that from your phone. WA Police holiday advice suggests setting timers for lights and electronics, and closed shutters also keep valuables out of sight from windows.
Outdoor blinds need more care. Ziptrak recommends supervising motorised track-guided blinds while they move, because strong wind pressing on the fabric can affect smooth movement in the side tracks. On a breezy coast, put the shutters on the timer and run the blinds when someone is home.
Nearly every Secret Harbour home is a separate house
In the 2021 Census, 98.7% of Secret Harbour's occupied dwellings were separate houses, far above the Greater Perth share of 77.8%. Townhouses were 1.0% and flats 0.1%. Home ownership was 79.4%, above the Greater Perth figure of 70.4%, with 18.4% owned outright.

Secret Harbour has ocean frontage, and salt carried inland on the wind is hard on outdoor metal. Our outdoor blinds use marine-grade aluminium frames, and for shutters it is worth asking about finishes at the measure.
About 33.5% of the suburb is designated bush fire prone on the state map in effect from 13 December 2025. Building and Energy's advice for retrofitting existing homes says windows should be protected with metal screens or bushfire shutters. Ozroll states its roller shutters have been tested by the CSIRO against BAL-29 and BAL-40 standards.
Mandurah Road, Anstey Road and the Mandurah Line run through the area. Bedrooms facing any of them are worth flagging when we visit.
Secret Harbour town centre rules and your home
The City of Rockingham has a planning policy for the Secret Harbour Town Centre. In its Core Precinct it asks for continuous pedestrian shelter at street level, through a generally continuous street verandah or awning at least 2.5m wide. That is a rule for shops and other town centre premises, not for houses.
Homes fall under the state exemption instead. Alterations to a single house need no development approval when the R-Codes apply, the work meets the deemed-to-comply provisions and the house is not heritage protected. The City's development applications page lists a single house, including patio additions, among the applications that do not need development approval on residential zoned land.
