Roller shutters in Seville Grove

Seville Grove's burglary rate is now level with the rest of Perth. WA Police recorded 46 burglaries in the suburb in 2025. Set against the 11,408 residents counted at the 2021 Census, that is 4.0 per 1,000, and the rate for metropolitan Perth was also 4.0. Police publish burglary at suburb level as a single figure, so homes and businesses are counted together.

Over five years the count has come down. There were 72 burglaries in 2021 and 46 in 2025, a fall of 36.1%. Go back further and the drop is larger again: 136 in 2017 and 172 in 2018. The path has not been perfectly smooth, as 2025 finished a little above the 39 recorded in 2024.

What a shutter adds to that picture is simple. It is a physical barrier on windows and doors, and when it is down it makes forced entry slower and noisier. It works with your locks, sensor lights and alarm, not in place of them.

Separate houses make up 94.4% of occupied dwellings in Seville Grove, well above the Greater Perth figure of 77.8%. Semi-detached homes, terraces and townhouses account for 5.5%, and the census recorded no flats. Home ownership sits at 75.2%, with 15.2% of homes owned outright.

On a house, residential roller shutters tend to go on bedrooms first, then the sliding doors to the back yard. Seniors Card members may also be eligible for the state Safety and Security Rebate, which lists security window screens or window shutters as an eligible item, up to $400 and claimable once during the life of the scheme.

Planning is usually straightforward for a house. The state rules exempt work on a single house from development approval when three things hold: the R-Codes apply, the work meets their deemed-to-comply provisions, and the property is not heritage protected.

The City also has a Designing Out Crime policy, PLN 3.14. Its guidance is that target hardening such as fencing and roller shutters, if required, should be used as sparingly as possible, be visually permeable and suit the design of the building.
