Roller shutters for Camillo homes

WA Police recorded 22 burglaries in Camillo in 2025, down from 36 in 2021. That is a fall of 38.9% across the five years, and 2024, with 23, was almost the same as 2025.

Per head, 22 burglaries comes to 5.0 for every 1,000 residents, against 4.0 across metropolitan Perth. Read the Camillo rate with some care: it is worked out on the 4,442 residents counted in 2021, and the population is estimated to have grown 16.4% by 2025, so the rate overstates. The suburb figure covers homes and businesses together.

A shutter is not a guarantee of anything. What it gives a house is a physical barrier on windows and doors, which turns forced entry into something slower and noisier.

Separate houses were 95.5% of Camillo dwellings in 2021, well above the Greater Perth figure of 77.8%. Semi-detached and townhouse dwellings were 4.1% and flats 0.5%. Home ownership, at 71.8%, was close to the Greater Perth figure of 70.4%.

Camillo is in the City of Armadale, which runs a Security Incentive Scheme. For 2026 to 2027 the scheme lists roller shutters at $200, or $250 for Pensioner Concession, Health Care or WA Seniors Card holders. WA Seniors Card members can also look at the state Safety and Security Rebate, which covers security window screens or window shutters up to $400 per household. Check each scheme's terms before you book.

Planning is usually simple for a house. Under the state rules a single house needs no development approval for this kind of work where the R-Codes apply, the work meets the deemed-to-comply provisions and the place is not heritage protected. Camillo is not one of the localities on the City's Heritage List.

Where a development application is lodged, the City's Designing Out Crime policy comes into play. It says that, if required, roller shutters should be used as sparingly as possible, be visually permeable and be sympathetic to the built form design. It is a planning policy for assessing development, not a ban on shutters.
