Gosnells burglaries since the 2019 peak
Burglaries in Gosnells are falling. WA Police counted 239 in 2021 and 109 in 2025, a drop of 54.4% over five years. The count peaked at 482 in 2019, and the latest year alone went from 177 to 109.
Measured against the 21,149 people counted in the 2021 Census, 109 burglaries is 5.2 for every 1,000 residents. The rate across metropolitan Perth was 4.0, so Gosnells still sits above it even after the fall. Police report a single suburb figure that takes in homes and businesses together.
What a shutter adds is simple. Rolled down, it is a physical barrier on windows and doors, and anyone trying to force a way in has a slower and noisier job of it. It works alongside good locks and lighting rather than in place of them.

Gosnells homes during long absences
Nobody can tell from the census who works away on a roster, but the mining share of employed residents gives a rough guide. In Gosnells it was 4.8% in 2021, below the Greater Perth figure of 6.6%. Treat it as a proxy for fly-in fly-out work, not a count. The 65 and over share is above average: 17.7% were 65 or over, against 15.8% across Greater Perth.
Before a long trip, the WA Police holiday checklist says to make sure every door and window is locked, including the ones for pets, the garage and the shed. Motorised shutters fold neatly into that routine. One remote brings them all down together, and the smartphone app lets you raise or lower them from wherever you happen to be, say for a neighbour who is coming round to water the garden.
On a hot afternoon, closed shutters also keep direct sun off the glass while the place is empty.

Houses and townhouses in Gosnells
At the 2021 Census, 80.9% of occupied dwellings in Gosnells were separate houses, a little above the Greater Perth share of 77.8%. Semi-detached, terrace and townhouse dwellings made up another 15.7%, and flats 3.0%. Home ownership was 64.3%, against 70.4% for Greater Perth.
For a freestanding house, residential roller shutters usually start on the bedroom windows and the sliding door to the yard. Townhouses in a strata scheme are different. The default conduct by-laws say an owner needs the strata company's written consent to keep anything visible from outside the lot that is not in keeping with the rest of the building, and that consent sits on top of any council or building approval.
Patios and alfrescos are where outdoor blinds come in. We make Ziptrak, Slidetrack, cafe and motorised blinds for those spaces, measured on site and cut to the opening in Wangara.

Gosnells bush fire mapping and the Canning River
Close to half of Gosnells, 49.1% of its land, is designated bush fire prone on the state map in effect from 13 December 2025. For existing homes, Building and Energy's retrofit advice is that windows should be protected with metal screens or bushfire shutters. Ozroll, whose components we use, states that its roller shutters have been tested by the CSIRO against BAL-29 and BAL-40. If your lot has a bushfire attack level assessment, have it handy when we visit.
The Canning River runs through or along the suburb, and several busy corridors cross it: Tonkin Highway, Corfield Street, Albany Highway and the Armadale Line. If your bedrooms face one of them, mention it at the measure.

Gosnells heritage list and activity centre glazing
Start with the City of Gosnells Heritage List under Local Planning Scheme No. 24. Gosnells is one of the suburb headings on it, and the City says development on a listed place needs planning approval before any works begin. If your house is listed, apply before you order.
For everyone else the state rules decide it. Shutters on a single house are exempt from development approval only when three things hold: the R-Codes apply, the work meets their deemed-to-comply provisions, and the place is not heritage protected. Being exempt from planning does not settle the building side, and the City's exempted development policy notes that a building permit or other approval may still be needed.
Shops in the Gosnells activity centre face an extra test. The City's activity centre policy asks for visually permeable glazing over at least 70% of a building's ground floor facade, so talk to us before planning a commercial shutter there.
With 17.7% of residents aged 65 or over, the WA Seniors Card Safety and Security Rebate is worth checking. It lists security window screens or window shutters as an eligible item, and members may be able to claim up to $400 per household, once over the life of the scheme.
