Orelia burglary numbers since 2017
WA Police counted 32 burglaries in Orelia in 2025. Spread across the 4,535 people living here at the 2021 Census, that is 7.1 per 1,000 residents, almost twice the metropolitan Perth rate of 4.0. Police publish one combined burglary figure for each suburb, so it takes in homes and businesses together.
The five year direction is down. There were 59 burglaries in 2021 and 32 in 2025, a fall of 45.8%, and the 2017 count was 66. The five year count has fallen, even if the rate still sits well over the metro figure.
Roller shutters fit into that picture as one layer among several. Lowered, a shutter is a physical barrier on windows and doors, covering the glass so that forced entry becomes slower and noisier. The WA Police burglary flyer has its own checklist: lock every door, window, gate and shed, and keep valuables out of sight from windows.

When an Orelia house sits empty
How many Orelia homes are left empty for long stretches? The census cannot say, because it does not record fly-in fly-out rosters. Mining employment is the nearest proxy: 5.9% of employed residents worked in mining in 2021, a little under the Greater Perth figure of 6.6%. Residents aged 65 or over made up 14.2% of the suburb, against 15.8% for Greater Perth.
Whoever is away, and for whatever reason, motorised shutters take some of the work out of leaving. One remote lowers every shutter as you head out the door. Add a WiFi hub and you can raise or lower them from your phone while you are away from home. Set a timer and they open in the morning and close at night on their own. That sits well with the WA Police holiday advice to set timers for lights and electronics, so the house does not sit dark and still for days.
In January, closed shutters also keep the afternoon sun off the glass while nobody is there to draw the curtains.

Houses and flats in Orelia, and what suits each
Landgate's suburb history records that this area began to be developed in 1952. Most homes are separate houses: 81.8% of occupied dwellings at the 2021 Census, against 77.8% across Greater Perth. Flats and apartments account for another 16.1%, and semi-detached homes or townhouses for just 2.2%.
On a house, residential roller shutters usually go first on bedrooms and street facing windows, then on the big sliding door to the yard. Flats work differently. Under WA's default strata by-laws, an owner needs the strata company's written consent to keep anything visible from outside the lot that is not in keeping with the rest of the building, so get that consent in writing before you order.
Out the back, a patio or alfresco can be closed in with outdoor blinds: Ziptrak and Slidetrack track blinds, cafe blinds, or motorised versions that run from a remote.
Our range

Orelia on the bush fire map
The state's bush fire prone map, in effect from 13 December 2025, designates 56.2% of Orelia's land. For existing homes, Building and Energy's retrofit advice is that windows should be protected with metal screens or bushfire shutters. Ozroll, which makes the shutter components we build with, states that its roller shutters have been tested by the CSIRO against BAL-29 and BAL-40 standards. If your lot has a bushfire attack level assessment, bring it out when we measure so we can talk it through.
Thomas Road crosses the suburb and is mapped under the state's road and rail noise policy as a strategic freight or major traffic route. If your bedrooms face it, mention that at the measure.

City of Kwinana rules for Orelia homeowners
Orelia sits wholly within the City of Kwinana. The state planning regulations let you add to a single house without development approval only if all three conditions hold: the R-Codes apply, the work meets their deemed-to-comply provisions, and the house is not heritage protected. The City's planning page says much the same in plainer terms, that development on residential zoned land which complies with the Residential Design Codes is often exempt from planning approval.
Heritage is the main exception. The City places its more protected places, in categories A, B and C, on a Heritage List, and a listed place has legal protection under the 2015 planning regulations. If your home is on that list, ask the City before shutters go on.
For seniors, the WA Seniors Card Safety and Security Rebate covers security window screens or window shutters, up to $400 per household. The City of Kwinana's seniors page describes this state rebate and names roller shutters among the items it can go towards.
