Roller shutters in Midland

Police count burglary as one figure for each suburb, and in Midland that figure covers a large business area. With 43.9% of the suburb's land commercial or industrial, the 2025 count of 104 burglaries includes businesses as well as homes.

The count is falling. Midland recorded 294 burglaries in 2017, 175 in 2021 and 142 in 2024, so the 2025 figure was 40.6% lower than 2021 and 64.6% lower than 2017.

Spread over the 6,335 residents counted at the 2021 Census, 104 burglaries gives a rate of 16.4 per 1,000, against 4.0 for metropolitan Perth. Keep in mind that the count includes shops and workplaces while the rate is worked out on residents alone.

For a home or a shopfront, a roller shutter is a physical barrier on windows and doors. It makes forced entry slower and noisier, and it rolls up out of sight when you open for the day.

Midland's housing is unlike most of Perth. Only 32.2% of occupied dwellings are separate houses, against 77.8% across Greater Perth. Semi-detached homes, terraces and townhouses make up 50.6%, and flats 16.8%. Home ownership is 34.6%, compared with 70.4% for Greater Perth. The City of Swan's history records that the township of Midland Junction was established in 1891, after private land was subdivided and put up for sale by James Morrison; the name was shortened to Midland on 23 June 1961.

Those figures make strata the first question for many Midland homes. Under the default conduct by-laws, an owner needs the strata company's written consent to keep anything visible from outside the lot that is out of keeping with the rest of the building, and must give 14 days written notice before altering the structure of the lot.

18.8% of Midland residents are 65 or over. Holders of a WA Seniors Card can claim the Safety and Security Rebate, which lists security window screens or window shutters as eligible items, up to $400 per household and once only.
