Too few Greenmount burglaries to call a trend
WA Police counted 8 burglaries in Greenmount during 2025. Measured against the 2,666 people who live here, that is 3.0 per 1,000 residents, under the metropolitan rate of 4.0.
With counts this low, one or two incidents can swing a year either way, so the numbers are too small to read a trend. For the record, there were 44 in 2017, 14 in 2021 and 18 in 2024, and the average from 2021 to 2025 was 17 a year. The first six months of 2026 added 4.
So the case for shutters here is not about a rising count. When a shutter is down it is a physical barrier on windows and doors, and it makes forced entry slower and noisier.

Away from Greenmount: closing up the house
Greenmount has an older population than Perth as a whole. At the 2021 Census, 25.7% of residents were aged 65 or over, against 15.8% for Greater Perth, and the median age was 46.
Mining employed 7.1% of working residents, a little above the Greater Perth figure of 6.6%. The census does not ask about fly-in fly-out rosters, so that share is only a rough proxy for households where someone works away.
Either way, a house that sits empty for a week or a month is easier to manage with motorised shutters. A remote closes the lot from one handset at the front door. Add a WiFi hub and you can raise or lower them from your phone wherever you are, or set a timer so they open each morning and close each evening. That pairs with the WA Police holiday checklist, which suggests timers for lights and electronics and locking every door and window before you go. On a hot week in January, shutters that stay down also keep the sun off the glass while nobody is home.

Greenmount houses and how we fit them
Greenmount is a suburb of houses. In 2021, 94.6% of occupied homes were separate houses, 5.3% were semi-detached or townhouses and just 0.5% were flats. Ownership is high too: 86.0% of homes were owned, and 41.4% were owned outright.
That makes residential roller shutters the usual starting point. Each one is built to the opening it covers. In Wangara we cut the Ozroll aluminium slats to size, build the pelmets and guides, fit the motor and test the shutter before it leaves the floor. If you want shutters that still work without mains power, ask about two options: Ozroll's battery drive, which is not reliant upon mains power, and hardwired motors with a manual override.
Outside, a covered patio or verandah can be closed in with outdoor blinds. We supply Ziptrak and Slidetrack blinds, cafe blinds and motorised blinds, all measured on site.

Bush fire prone land and airport contours in Greenmount
About three quarters of Greenmount, 77.5% of its land, is designated bush fire prone on the state map in effect from 13 December 2025. For existing homes, Building and Energy's retrofit advice is that windows should be protected with metal screens or bushfire shutters. Ozroll states that its roller shutters have been tested by the CSIRO against BAL-29 and BAL-40 standards, and adds that the details of each application should be considered for compliance. If you have a bushfire attack level assessment for your block, have it handy when we measure.
Two other local facts are worth knowing. Part of the suburb, 14.0% of its area, sits inside Perth Airport's ANEF 20 or higher contours, reaching the 20-25 zone. Great Eastern Highway and Old York Road also run through Greenmount.

Greenmount and the Mundaring heritage list
Greenmount comes under the Shire of Mundaring. The state's planning rules let a single house add shutters without development approval when three things are true: the R-Codes apply to the work, it meets their deemed-to-comply provisions, and the property is not heritage protected. On bush fire prone land that exemption may not apply where the site is rated BAL-40 or flame zone.
The heritage point is real here. Greenmount is one of the localities with places on the Shire's 2016 Heritage List of 58 places. The Shire says modification or additions to a listed place will usually require development approval, and may need referral to the Heritage Council of Western Australia. Its exemptions policy only covers places that are not on the list. If your home is listed, ask the Shire before you order.
Given how many residents are 65 or over, the WA Seniors Card Safety and Security Rebate is worth a look. Security window screens or window shutters are an eligible item, with up to $400 back per household, claimed once over the life of the scheme.

Questions about roller shutters in Greenmount
Are burglaries going up in Greenmount?
The counts are too small to read a trend either way. WA Police recorded 8 burglaries in 2025, a rate of 3.0 per 1,000 residents, against 4.0 across metropolitan Perth. There were 14 in 2021.
Does a heritage listed home in Greenmount need approval for shutters?
Usually, yes. The Shire of Mundaring says changes to a place on its Heritage List will usually require development approval. A house that is not listed is normally exempt if the R-Codes apply and the work is deemed-to-comply, though a BAL-40 or flame zone rating can change that.
Are roller shutters suitable for bush fire prone parts of Greenmount?
77.5% of Greenmount is designated bush fire prone. Building and Energy advises protecting windows on existing homes with metal screens or bushfire shutters, and Ozroll says its roller shutters have been tested by the CSIRO against BAL-29 and BAL-40. Bring your BAL assessment to the measure.
Can I control Greenmount shutters while I am travelling?
Yes, with motorised shutters and a WiFi hub. You can open or close them from your phone, or set a timer so they run at set times each day while the house is empty.
