The Mundaring burglary record in brief
There were 8 burglaries in Mundaring in 2025, by the WA Police count. Set against 3,190 residents, the rate is 2.5 per 1,000, well below the 4.0 for metropolitan Perth.
Yearly counts here are too small to read a trend from. Police recorded 41 in 2017, 20 in 2021 and 7 in 2024, and the average from 2021 to 2025 was 11.6 a year. None were recorded in the first six months of 2026.
Low numbers are welcome, but a shutter is about the house in front of you. Down, it is a physical barrier on windows and doors, and it makes forced entry slower and noisier.

Closing up a Mundaring home before you go
Mundaring's population is older than Perth's. At the 2021 Census, 27.9% of residents were 65 or over, against 15.8% for Greater Perth. Mining accounted for 9.5% of employed residents, well above the Greater Perth figure of 6.6%. The census does not record fly-in fly-out work, so read the mining share as a rough proxy for people who work away.
Before a long trip, closing every shutter by hand takes a while. Motorised shutters on a remote all come down together, and with a WiFi hub you can raise or lower them from your phone while you are gone, or set a timer so they open and close on a daily schedule. WA Police holiday advice suggests timers for lights and electronics, setting your alarm and giving a trusted person your contact details and spare keys.
If you want shutters that still open without mains power, Ozroll's battery drive and hardwired motors with a manual override both allow for that. In summer, closed shutters also keep the sun off the glass while the house is shut.

Mundaring houses and shutter choices
Landgate dates permanent settlement in Mundaring to 1882-84, and MH Jacoby adopted the name for the Mundaring Vineyard Company in 1893. Today the suburb is mostly houses: 92.2% of occupied homes were separate houses in 2021, and 6.9% were semi-detached or townhouses. 84.8% were owned, and 45.8% were owned outright.
For a house, start with residential roller shutters on the rooms you use most and the largest glass. We make each one in Wangara from Ozroll aluminium slats, pelmets and guides, and test it before it travels out, and there is a 10-year warranty on roller shutters.
If you own a townhouse in a strata scheme, talk to the strata company first. The default by-laws need its written consent for anything visible from outside your lot that is not in keeping with the building.
For a deck or alfresco, cafe blinds, Ziptrak, Slidetrack and motorised outdoor blinds are all options.

The Mundaring bushfire map and the highway
Nearly all of Mundaring, 98.1% of its land, is designated bush fire prone on the state map in effect from 13 December 2025. That is the main local factor for shutters here.
Building and Energy's advice on retrofitting an existing home, for homes up to BAL-29, includes protecting windows with metal screens or bushfire shutters. Ozroll states that its roller shutters have been tested by the CSIRO against BAL-29 and BAL-40 standards, while noting that the specific details of each application should be considered for compliance. Bushfire building rules are generally not retrospective, but a BAL assessment helps us quote the right product, so share it if you have one.
Away from the bush, Great Eastern Highway is the other local feature, running through the suburb.

Mundaring heritage listing and approval
Shutters on a single house in the Shire of Mundaring are exempt from development approval under the state rules, but only if the R-Codes apply, the work is deemed-to-comply, and the home is not heritage protected. A further exception covers bush fire prone land: a site rated BAL-40 or flame zone can need approval.
Mundaring itself has places on the Shire's Heritage List. Under the Shire's own policies, the exemptions in Local Planning Policy 3.5 apply only to places not on that list, and Local Planning Policy 3.3 limits the exemptions for listed places to a short set of cases, such as internal works and maintenance. For anything else on a listed home, the Shire says development approval will usually be needed, and the proposal may be referred to the Heritage Council of Western Australia.
With so many residents aged 65 or over, the WA Seniors Card Safety and Security Rebate deserves a mention. It lists security window screens or window shutters as eligible, up to $400, and it can be claimed once.

Questions about roller shutters in Mundaring
Is burglary rising in Mundaring?
The numbers are too small to read a trend. WA Police recorded 8 burglaries in 2025, a rate of 2.5 per 1,000 residents against 4.0 for metropolitan Perth, and none in the first six months of 2026.
Will my shutters still work if the power goes out?
They can. Ozroll's battery drive is not reliant upon mains power, and hardwired motors can be fitted with a manual override that works when there is no power.
Do heritage listed homes in Mundaring need approval for shutters?
Usually. The Shire of Mundaring says changes to a place on its Heritage List will usually require development approval, and its exemptions policy does not cover listed places. Unlisted single houses are normally exempt when the R-Codes apply and the work is deemed-to-comply.
Do you install as far out as Mundaring?
