Martin burglary counts from 2021

Martin is a small suburb with a small burglary count. WA Police recorded 22 burglaries in 2021 and 25 in 2025, so over five years the figure is little changed. The years in between ran 38, 20 and 23, and the 2017 count was 38.

Only 1,854 people lived in Martin at the 2021 Census, so those 25 burglaries work out at 13.5 per 1,000 residents, against 4.0 for metropolitan Perth. With a population this size, each extra burglary moves the rate more than it would in a larger suburb, which is why the year by year counts are worth reading alongside it. The suburb figure covers homes and businesses together.

What a shutter adds is simple. Lowered over windows and glass doors, it is a physical barrier that makes forced entry slower and noisier.

Locking down a Martin property while you are away

Martin skews older. At the 2021 Census, 21.0% of residents were 65 or over, against 15.8% across Greater Perth, and the median age was 40. Mining employed 6.0% of working residents (Greater Perth 6.6%), a figure that serves only as a proxy for fly-in fly-out work, since the census does not ask about it.

WA Police holiday advice is to make sure all doors and windows are locked before you go, including those for pets, the garage and the shed. With WiFi connectivity, you can then check on the shutters and raise or lower them from your smartphone, even when you are away from home, rather than ringing a neighbour.

The WA Police safety sheet for seniors also suggests fitting quality security screens on doors and windows. Shutters can sit alongside screens, and an Ozroll battery drive does not rely on mains power, so the shutters still work in a power failure.

Martin houses and where shutters go first

Nearly every Martin home is a house. The 2021 Census counted 92.6% of the 607 occupied dwellings as separate houses and 5.8% as semi-detached or townhouses, with no flats at all. 84.0% were owned, well above the Greater Perth figure of 70.4%.

On homes like these, residential roller shutters tend to go on the bedrooms first, then on glass doors and the windows that face the bush or the afternoon sun. Each one is made to measure in our Wangara factory from Ozroll slats, and comes with a 10-year warranty on roller shutters. Verandahs and patios can take outdoor blinds from the Ziptrak, Slidetrack and cafe ranges, manual or motorised.

Martin is almost entirely bush fire prone

97.6% of Martin is designated bush fire prone on the state map that took effect on 13 December 2025, so for most owners bushfire is part of the shutter conversation. Building and Energy's guidance for retrofitting existing homes, written for homes up to BAL-29, is that windows should be protected with metal screens or bushfire shutters. Ozroll says its roller shutters have been tested by the CSIRO against BAL-29 and BAL-40 standards, and that the specific details of each application still need to be considered for compliance.

If you have a bushfire attack level assessment for the block, have it ready when we measure. Where the BAL is BAL-40 or BAL-FZ, the state planning rules can require development approval even for work that would otherwise be exempt; that applies to single houses on lots totalling 1,100 m2 or more, among other buildings.

The Canning River runs through or along the suburb, and Tonkin Highway, a strategic freight or major traffic route, passes through it.

Martin heritage places and City of Gosnells approval

With more than one resident in five aged 65 or over, the WA Seniors Card Safety and Security Rebate is worth checking first. It covers security window screens or window shutters, up to $400 per household, on a minimum purchase of $100. The rebate was reintroduced on 22 August 2021, and each household can claim it once.

Martin is named on the City of Gosnells Local Planning Scheme No. 24 Heritage List. For a listed place, the City requires planning approval before any works start. For other houses, the state exemption from development approval holds when the R-Codes apply, the work meets the deemed-to-comply provisions and the place is not heritage protected, subject to the bushfire condition above. Even exempt work may still need a building permit, as the City's LPP 1.3 points out.
