Kingsley's falling burglary numbers
Kingsley recorded 45 burglaries in 2021 and 17 in 2025, a fall of 62% across the five years. With 13,204 residents counted at the 2021 Census, the 2025 rate is 1.3 per 1,000, about a third of the metropolitan rate of 4.0. The count was higher again in 2018, at 77.
The count has come down steadily after 2021: 38 in 2022, then 19 in both 2023 and 2024.
A shutter cannot promise anything about burglary, and we will not pretend otherwise. What it does provide is a physical barrier on windows and doors, which makes forced entry slower and noisier. The WA Seniors Card rebate guide adds that window shutters bring benefits beyond security, including energy savings and sunlight control.

Kingsley's over 65s and closing up the house
Nearly a quarter of Kingsley residents, 23.5%, were 65 or older at the 2021 Census, well above the Greater Perth share of 15.8%. The median age was 44, and 40.0% of homes were owned outright. Mining employed 5.1% of working residents, under the Greater Perth figure of 6.6%; with no census question on fly-in fly-out work, that number is a proxy only.
Motorised shutters take the effort out of daily use. Wall-mounted controls sit where you need them, and a remote can lower every shutter in the house together. For time away, WiFi lets you run them from a phone, and the automatic timer opens and closes them at set times.
WA Police safety advice for seniors suggests deadlocks on external doors, key locks on all windows and quality security screens on doors and windows. A roller shutter sits outside the glass as one more layer on top of those.

Kingsley houses and townhouses: getting the fit right
The 2021 Census counted 84.3% of occupied dwellings in Kingsley as separate houses and 13.7% as semi-detached, terrace or townhouses. Home ownership was 83.7%.
For a house, we usually start with residential roller shutters on bedrooms, then the street facing windows and larger sliding doors. Every shutter is built to measure in Wangara with Ozroll aluminium slats, and each motor is tested before delivery.
Townhouses need one more step. The default strata by-laws require the strata company's written consent for anything visible from outside the lot that is not in keeping with the building, and 14 days written notice before any alteration to the structure of the lot.
Outdoor areas can be closed in with Slidetrack, Ziptrak or cafe blinds, or with electric outdoor blinds run from a remote.

Freeway, rail and bushland near Kingsley homes
Kingsley has several mapped noise sources. Hepburn Avenue, Whitfords Avenue, Wanneroo Road and the Mitchell Freeway are all classed as strategic freight or major traffic routes under the state road and rail noise policy, and the Yanchep Line runs through the suburb. If your bedrooms face one, say so when we measure.
About 34.0% of Kingsley is also designated bush fire prone on the state map in effect from 13 December 2025. Building and Energy advises that windows on existing homes should be protected with metal screens or bushfire shutters, and Ozroll says its roller shutters have been tested by the CSIRO against BAL-29 and BAL-40 standards.

Kingsley approvals, heritage and the Seniors Card rebate
Start with the rebate, because it suits so many Kingsley households. The WA Seniors Card Safety and Security Rebate covers security window screens or window shutters with a minimum purchase of $100, and pays up to $400. Each household can claim once for the life of the scheme.
On planning, Kingsley is in the City of Joondalup. A single house can usually take shutters without development approval, provided the R-Codes apply, the works meet the deemed-to-comply provisions, and the place is not heritage protected.
Heritage is a real, if narrow, point here. The City's heritage page records one State Register place in Kingsley, and says inclusion on the Heritage List means development approval is required to alter or develop. If your property is listed, check with the City before ordering.
