Comparing 2021 with 2025, Marangaroo's burglary count has barely moved: WA Police recorded 21 in 2021 and 20 in 2025, so the five year trend is little changed. For a suburb of 10,483 people, 20 burglaries is a rate of 1.9 per 1,000, about half the metropolitan rate of 4.0.

Go back further and the picture improves. There were 61 burglaries in 2017 and 92 in 2018, which puts 2025 about two thirds below the 2017 level. In between, the yearly figure has moved around, from 48 in 2022 to 22 in 2024. Each count covers homes and businesses together, as suburb burglary figures always do.

So where does a shutter come in? Rolled down, it is a physical barrier on windows and doors. Anyone trying to force entry faces a slower, noisier job, and the glass behind it is covered.

According to Landgate, initial surveying of Marangaroo for subdivision began in March 1977. In the 2021 Census, 90.5% of occupied dwellings were separate houses and 9.0% were semi-detached, terrace or townhouses, with flats at just 0.4%. Most households own or are buying their home, 77.9% against 70.4% for Greater Perth.

For a separate house, start with residential roller shutters on the rooms you sleep in and the windows that face the street, then add the larger glass doors. Owners of a strata townhouse should get the strata company's written consent before ordering, because the default by-laws cover anything visible from outside the lot that does not match the building.

Marangaroo is wholly within the City of Wanneroo. The starting point is the state rule for single houses: fixing shutters is exempt from development approval when the R-Codes apply, the work meets their deemed-to-comply provisions, and the property is not heritage protected.

The City's exemptions policy, adopted on 23 June 2026, does not cover a site on its Municipal Heritage List or the State Heritage Register, and its heritage places policy says a heritage-protected place still needs development approval. If your house is listed, speak to the City before you order.

As 17.7% of Marangaroo residents are 65 or over, the WA Seniors Card Safety and Security Rebate may help with the cost. It lists security window screens or window shutters as an eligible item, worth up to $400 per household, on a purchase of at least $100.
