Carine's burglary count is too small to show a trend

Carine had 12 burglaries in 2025, going by WA Police figures. Spread over the 7,330 residents counted at the 2021 Census, that is 1.6 per 1,000, well under the rate of 4.0 for metropolitan Perth.

With counts this low, one or two incidents either way can swing the line, so the numbers are too small to read a trend. For the record, police counted 23 in 2017, 13 in 2021 and 12 in 2025, which averages out at 12 a year across 2021 to 2025.

So what does a shutter add? Rolled down, it is a physical barrier on windows and doors, and it makes forced entry slower and noisier. It belongs alongside the basics in the WA Police burglary flyer, such as deadlocks on external doors, key locks on windows and sensor lighting.

Burglary counts cover homes and businesses together. With fewer than 20 burglaries a year on average, the numbers are too small to read a reliable trend.

Closing up a Carine house before a long trip

Two census figures hint at how often Carine homes are left empty. People aged 65 and over make up 23.5% of residents, well above the Greater Perth share of 15.8%. Mining employs 6.2% of working residents, a little under 6.6% for Greater Perth. The census does not record fly-in fly-out work, so the mining share is only a rough proxy for it.

Motorised shutters can all be closed from one remote, so the house is shut before you reach the car. With WiFi you can raise or lower them from your phone while you are away, and a timer can open them in the morning and close them at night. Separately, the WA Police holiday advice is to set timers for lights and electronics and to lock every door and window, including the garage and shed.

On hardwired Somfy motors, a Chronis remote has a built in timer that can run up to 6 time slots a day. Ozroll's battery drive does not rely on mains power and still works in a power failure, though Ozroll says its portable E-Port controllers do not lend themselves to automation.

Shutters and blinds for houses built in Carine since the 1970s

Separate houses are 86.0% of occupied dwellings in Carine, against 77.8% across Greater Perth, and home ownership sits at 87.6% compared with 70.4%. The City of Stirling's thematic history notes that much of the land stayed largely undeveloped until the 1960s, and that most of the housing has been built since the 1970s.

For a house, residential roller shutters fit over windows and doors. The smaller share of townhouses (10.2%) and flats (4.1%) may need a strata check before anything is ordered, which the council section below covers.

For an alfresco or patio, our outdoor blinds close the space in. The range takes in Ziptrak and Slidetrack track guided blinds, cafe blinds and motorised blinds, all cut and assembled in the same Wangara factory as the shutters.

Bush fire prone land and busy roads in Carine

27.4% of Carine is designated bush fire prone on the state map that came into effect on 13 December 2025. For existing homes, Building and Energy's retrofit advice is that windows should be protected with metal screens or bushfire shutters. Ozroll states that its roller shutters have been tested by the CSIRO against BAL-29 and BAL-40. If you have a bushfire attack level assessment for your lot, have it handy when we measure.

Six routes in Carine are mapped under the state's road and rail noise policy: Beach Road, Reid Highway, Marmion Avenue, Mitchell Freeway, Duffy Road and the Yanchep Line. If your bedrooms face one of them, mention it so we can talk about which openings to cover first.

What the City of Stirling asks of Carine homeowners

Carine is in the City of Stirling. Under the state planning rules, alterations or additions to a single house are exempt from development approval only if three things hold: the R-Codes apply, the work meets their deemed-to-comply provisions, and the place is not heritage protected.

Bush fire prone land adds a further test. Where a bushfire attack level assessment puts a site at BAL-40 or BAL-FZ, the state regulations require development approval despite the usual exemptions, for the development they cover, such as a single house on lots totalling 1,100 square metres or more. Carine is also among the localities with places on the City of Stirling Heritage List. The City says any application for a listed place will be assessed on its merits in view of the listing, so check whether your address is on it.

With 23.5% of residents aged 65 or over, the WA Seniors Card Safety and Security Rebate is worth checking. Security window screens or window shutters are an eligible item, up to $400 per household, and the rebate can be claimed once.
