Roller shutters in Halls Head

WA Police recorded 28 burglaries in Halls Head in 2025. Spread over 14,474 residents at the 2021 Census, that is 1.9 per 1,000, about half the metropolitan Perth rate of 4.0. As with all suburb figures, the count covers homes and businesses together.

The direction is down. There were 105 burglaries in 2021, so 2025 was 73.3% lower, and the count also fell from 47 in 2024. In 2017 the figure was 82.

A low rate still is not zero, and some owners want the extra layer anyway. A roller shutter gives a physical barrier on windows and doors, which makes forced entry slower and noisier.

At the 2021 Census, 89.6% of the 5,314 occupied dwellings in Halls Head were separate houses, 8.4% semi-detached or townhouses and 1.9% flats. Home ownership was 77.6%, above 70.4% for Greater Perth, and 36.6% of homes were owned outright.

Most houses start with residential roller shutters on bedrooms and sliding doors. Townhouses in a strata scheme need the strata company's written consent first for anything visible from outside that is out of keeping with the building. Shops and offices in the town centre can take commercial roller shutters, subject to the precinct plan set out below. The suburb is named after Henry Hall, who was granted land in the area in the 1830s, and was officially named on 5 October 1970.

Halls Head is in the City of Mandurah. The Halls Head Town Centre Precinct Plan (August 2017, incorporating Modification 4) says that, where provided, security screens and grills are to be designed to be integral to the architecture of the development. That is a rule for development in the town centre, and it is the one to check before fitting shutters to a shopfront there.

For homes, state rules apply. A single house is exempt from development approval for works like shutters when the R-Codes apply, the work meets their deemed-to-comply provisions, and the place is not heritage protected. Heritage protected means, among other things, a place on the State Register, on a local heritage list or within a heritage area.

Seniors Card members can claim the WA Seniors Card Safety and Security Rebate, which lists security window screens or window shutters, up to $400 per household. With 22.5% of residents aged 65 or over, it is worth asking about.
