Roller shutters and blinds in Wannanup

The numbers in Wannanup are too small to read a trend. WA Police recorded 11 burglaries in 2021 and 11 again in 2025, and the average over those five years is 10.2 a year, so a couple of incidents either way can swing the count noticeably.

For 2025, 11 burglaries among 4,142 residents gives a rate of 2.7 per 1,000. That is below the metropolitan Perth rate of 4.0. As with all suburb figures, the count includes homes and businesses. Looking further back, there were 21 in 2017.

Low numbers are welcome, and a shutter still earns its place. Lowered over the glass, it is a physical barrier on windows and doors that makes forced entry slower and noisier, and on a house near the water it also gives you sunlight control.

The housing makes the rest simple. Separate houses are 90.8% of occupied dwellings, with 6.5% semi-detached or townhouses. Home ownership is 75.5%, above the Greater Perth figure of 70.4%, and 37.5% of homes are owned outright.

For the house itself, residential roller shutters go on bedrooms, living room windows and sliding doors. If you own a townhouse in a strata scheme, the default by-laws need the strata company's written consent for anything visible from outside that is not in keeping with the building.

Wannanup sits in the City of Mandurah. No City planning finding on shutters, screens or heritage applies to the suburb, so for a house the state exemption is what counts: works to a single house need no development approval when the R-Codes apply, the works are deemed-to-comply, and the place is not heritage protected.

A building permit is a separate matter. The Building Act requires one for building work unless an exemption applies, and the exemptions listed in the Building Regulations do not name shutters or blinds as such, so it depends on the job. We will talk it through when we quote.
