Roller shutters in Waikiki

Waikiki recorded 43 burglaries in 2025, according to WA Police. Five years earlier, in 2021, the count was 142, so the number has fallen by 69.7% over that stretch. The 2017 figure of 148 shows the drop is not a one year blip.

Measured against population, 43 burglaries is 3.5 per 1,000 residents. The rate across metropolitan Perth was 4.0, so Waikiki now sits a little under the metro figure. Police publish one burglary number per suburb, which means homes and businesses are counted together. Motor vehicle thefts eased over the same years, from 25 in 2021 to 17 in 2025.

Fewer burglaries is welcome, but a lower number is still not none. A roller shutter puts a physical barrier on windows and doors. With it down, anyone trying to force a way in faces a slower and noisier job, and the glass sits behind aluminium slats rather than in plain reach.

Waikiki is very much a suburb of separate houses. The 2021 Census counted 97.8% of occupied dwellings as separate houses, against 77.8% across Greater Perth, with townhouses at 1.7% and flats at 0.4%. Home ownership was 75.0%, above the Greater Perth figure of 70.4%.

The state planning rules exempt work on a single house from development approval when three conditions are all met: the R-Codes apply, the work complies with their deemed-to-comply provisions, and the property is not heritage protected. The City's development applications page lists a single house, including patio additions, among the applications that do not need development approval on residential zoned land.

Heritage listing changes that. The City's heritage policy says structures such as awnings must not affect how a place on its Heritage List presents to the street, so check the listing before ordering if your home has one.

WA Seniors Card members can also claim up to $400 through the state Safety and Security Rebate, which names security window screens or window shutters as an eligible item.
