Safety Bay burglary counts, 2017 to 2025
WA Police recorded 27 burglaries in Safety Bay in 2025. The count has fallen over five years, from 49 in 2021, a drop of 44.9%. In 2017 it was 70.
Per head, that is 3.5 burglaries for every 1,000 residents in 2025, below the metropolitan Perth rate of 4.0. As with all suburb figures, the count includes businesses as well as homes.
Below the metro rate is not the same as none. The WA Police home security checklist asks whether windows have key locks or security devices, and whether there are security screens on doors and windows. A roller shutter is a different product: it is a physical barrier on windows and doors, and it makes forced entry slower and noisier.

Older households in Safety Bay and automatic shutters
At the 2021 Census, 23.1% of Safety Bay residents were 65 or over, above the Greater Perth figure of 15.8%, and the median age was 44. Mining employed 6.9% of working residents, close to the Greater Perth figure of 6.6%. We use that mining share only as a rough proxy for fly-in fly-out work, because the census does not record it.
Automatic shutters suit both kinds of household. For an older resident, a wall switch or remote replaces a strap that has to be pulled by hand. For anyone heading off for a few weeks, the shutters can be closed with one press, checked from a phone through a WiFi hub, and set on a timer to open and close each day. WA Police holiday advice says to set timers for lights and electronics and to leave a trusted person your contact details and spare keys, and a shutter schedule sits naturally alongside that.
Shutters lowered through a summer afternoon also keep heat off the glass while the house is shut up.

Safety Bay is a suburb of separate houses
Separate houses made up 93.6% of occupied dwellings in Safety Bay at the 2021 Census, well above the Greater Perth figure of 77.8%. Flats were 6.3%, and the census counted no semi-detached homes or townhouses at all. 40.8% of homes were owned outright.
With so many houses, residential roller shutters are the natural starting point: bedrooms, living rooms and the glass doors to the yard. The smaller number of flat owners will need the strata company's written consent for anything visible from outside that is not in keeping with the building.
For a patio or alfresco, our outdoor blinds range covers Ziptrak, Slidetrack, cafe, crank handle and motorised blinds. Every outdoor blind is measured on site, then made in our Wangara factory.

Sea spray and metal finishes in Safety Bay
Safety Bay is ocean front, and the centre of the suburb is just 0.56 km from the coast. The Galvanizers Association of Australia's corrosivity guide grades sites by how close they sit to salt water: the first 200 m from rough seas and surf beaches falls in category C5, and land from 200 m to 1 km inland, along with the first 50 m around sheltered bays, in C4.
For a shutter or blind, that means paying attention to the finish, the fixings and a regular rinse with fresh water. We go through those choices at the measure, so the product suits how close your home is to the beach.

Safety Bay approvals and the Seniors Card rebate
Start with the rebate, since 23.1% of residents here were 65 or over at the 2021 Census. The WA Seniors Card Safety and Security Rebate lets members claim up to $400 per household towards eligible security items, and security window screens or window shutters are on the list. The rebate guide describes shutters as the more expensive option, but notes benefits beyond security, including saving on energy costs and sunlight control.
As for approval, the City of Rockingham's development applications page says a single house, including patio additions, does not require development approval on residential zoned land. Behind that sit the state conditions for an exempt single house: the R-Codes apply, the work is deemed-to-comply, and the place is not heritage protected.
If your home is on the City's Heritage List, Local Planning Policy 3.3.21 applies. Minor like-for-like work can go ahead without development approval, but awnings and similar additions must not change how the place presents to the street.
