Roller shutters in Mundijong

WA Police recorded 7 burglaries in Mundijong in 2025, the same number as in 2021. Spread across 1,246 residents, that is a rate of 5.6 per 1,000, above the metropolitan rate of 4.0. One combined count covers homes and businesses.

What the figures cannot show is a trend. Over the past nine years the yearly count has sat between 2 and 11, and counts that small are too few to read a direction from. A single incident more or less would shift the rate noticeably.

Roller shutters are a practical layer on top of locks. Down, a shutter is a physical barrier on the window or door behind it, which makes forced entry slower and noisier.

Of the 412 occupied private dwellings in Mundijong in 2021, 99.8% were separate houses, and the census recorded no townhouses or flats. 83.5% of households owned their home and 34.7% owned it outright.

Landgate's account of the town's origin is that it sat at the junction of the Rockingham-Jarrahdale line and the government line from Perth to Bunbury, built in 1893, and a town grew up around the junction. First declared as Manjedal in 1893, it was renamed Mundijong in 1897. That is how the town started, not a guide to the age of the homes there now.

The Shire's Local Planning Policy No 24, Designing Out Crime, adds design guidance. Where target hardening such as roller shutters is needed, it should be used as sparingly as possible and be "visually permeable and sympathetic to the built form design".

With 15.9% of residents aged 65 or over, a little above the Greater Perth share, the WA Seniors Card Safety and Security Rebate is worth knowing about. It lists security window screens or window shutters as eligible, up to $400, and it can be claimed once over the life of the scheme.
