A steep fall in Mount Pleasant break ins
Burglaries in Mount Pleasant have dropped hard. The 2021 count was 79; by 2025 it was 25, a fall of 68%. Each year in between came in lower than the one before: 55, then 50, then 29.
The 2025 figure equals 3.4 burglaries for every 1,000 residents, under the rate of 4.0 for metropolitan Perth as a whole. WA Police report one burglary figure per suburb, so homes and businesses are counted together. Motor vehicle thefts fell as well, from 26 in 2021 to 4 in 2025.
A low rate is still not zero, and a shutter is about your own house rather than the suburb average. Lowered over a window or sliding door, a roller shutter is a physical barrier, and it makes forced entry slower and noisier.

Leaving Mount Pleasant for work or holidays
Electric shutters change the routine of leaving. Every shutter in the house can come down from one remote on the way out the door, and with WiFi connectivity you can operate them from a smartphone while you are interstate or overseas. For automatic opening and closing, the Somfy Chronis remote used with hardwired motors has a built-in timer with up to 6 time slots a day, every day of the week. Ozroll's portable E-Port battery controller, by contrast, does not lend itself to automation, so ask for a hardwired motor if timers matter to you.
The census gives some local context. In 2021, 6.6% of employed Mount Pleasant residents worked in mining, the same as the Greater Perth share of 6.6%. That figure is a proxy only, because the census does not ask about fly-in fly-out rosters. Residents aged 65 or over made up 21.3%, against 15.8% across Greater Perth.
WA Police holiday advice includes two easy steps: set timers for lights and electronics, and let your local council or police know when you will be away.

Shutter options for Mount Pleasant houses and units
When the land was subdivided in the early 1950s it was called Mount Pleasant Estate, and the suburb took its name from that subdivision. At the 2021 Census, separate houses were 68.6% of occupied dwellings, with 19.2% semi-detached, terrace or townhouse and 11.9% flats or apartments.
Put those last two together and about three homes in ten are attached or in a block. Where they are strata titled, the strata company's written consent comes first for anything visible from outside the lot that is not in keeping with the building. Houses have a freer hand: start with residential roller shutters on the rooms you most want to close off, then add the large sliding doors.
For an alfresco or balcony, motorised outdoor blinds can be fitted with sun and wind sensors that adjust to changing weather. Ziptrak, Slidetrack and cafe blinds are also in the range, all made up in Wangara.

The Canning River, the freeway and the train line near Mount Pleasant
More than 3 km of Mount Pleasant's boundary lies along the Canning River, and that foreshore is part of the Swan Canning Riverpark.
Canning Highway, the Kwinana Freeway and the Mandurah Line all pass through or along the suburb. The state's road and rail noise policy maps the two roads as strategic freight or major traffic routes and the line as a metropolitan passenger railway. Bedrooms that face any of them are worth pointing out when we come to measure.

Mount Pleasant and the City of Melville exemption policy
Mount Pleasant is in the City of Melville. Its Local Planning Policy 1.17, Additional Development Exemptions, says residential development needs no planning approval where the R-Codes deemed-to-comply provisions are met, unless heritage considerations affect the site. Table 1 of the same policy exempts external fixtures that are not on the front elevation of a building. The policy does not say whether shutters or blinds count as external fixtures, so treat that line as a question for the City rather than an answer.
State rules set the baseline: works to a single house are exempt only where the R-Codes apply, the works are deemed-to-comply, and the place is not heritage protected. Properties on the City's local heritage list need planning approval for all development.
The WA Seniors Card Safety and Security Rebate covers security window screens or window shutters, up to $400 per household. With 21.3% of residents aged 65 or over, it is worth checking if you hold a Seniors Card.

Questions about roller shutters in Mount Pleasant
How far have burglaries fallen in Mount Pleasant?
From 79 in 2021 to 25 in 2025, according to WA Police. The 2025 rate of 3.4 per 1,000 residents is below the metropolitan rate of 4.0.
Do shutters on the front of a Mount Pleasant house need approval?
Possibly. The City of Melville's LPP 1.17 exempts external fixtures that are not on the front elevation, but it does not say whether shutters count as external fixtures. Residential work that meets the R-Codes deemed-to-comply provisions needs no planning approval unless heritage is involved. Ask the City if you are unsure.
Can my shutters open and close on a timer?
Yes, with a hardwired motor. The Somfy Chronis remote has a built-in timer with up to 6 time slots a day. Ozroll's portable E-Port battery controller is not suited to automation.
Do you cover Ardross, Brentwood and Rossmoyne?
Yes. They sit around Mount Pleasant, about 26 km from our Wangara factory in a straight line, and we measure and install there.
