Roller shutters Leeming

Burglaries in Leeming have dropped steeply. WA Police recorded 62 in 2021 and 14 in 2025, a fall of 77.4%, and the count had been 73 back in 2017. The two most recent years were both low, at 13 in 2024 and 14 in 2025.

On the 2021 Census population of 10,883, the 2025 count equals 1.3 burglaries per 1,000 residents, about a third of the metropolitan rate of 4.0. The suburb figure counts homes and businesses together, as WA Police do for every suburb.

That is a low figure, and this page will not pretend otherwise. Shutters still earn their keep in Leeming, mainly when the house is empty and on hot afternoons. Lowered, a roller shutter is a physical barrier on windows and doors, which makes forced entry slower and noisier.

The City of Melville's suburb history says Leeming was established in the late 1970s. Its name, approved in March 1971, comes from Leeming Road, which honours surveyor George Waters Leeming, who laid out roads for the Jandakot Agricultural Area in 1889. At the 2021 Census, 93.5% of occupied dwellings were separate houses, 6.2% were semi-detached or townhouses and 0.3% were flats. Home ownership was 86.7%, well above the Greater Perth figure of 70.4%.

That makes residential roller shutters the natural fit, starting with bedrooms and the windows that take the most sun. Most of Leeming is in the City of Melville, with part in the City of Cockburn. Wherever you are, the state exemption works the same way: work on a single house needs no development approval if the R-Codes apply, it meets the deemed-to-comply provisions, and the place is not heritage protected.

On the Melville side, the City's additional exemptions policy, LPP 1.17, says residential development that meets the deemed-to-comply provisions needs no planning approval unless heritage considerations affect the site. The WA Seniors Card Safety and Security Rebate lists security window screens or window shutters as eligible, up to $400 per household for a purchase of $100 or more. One claim is allowed per household for the life of the scheme.
