Too few burglaries in Floreat to call a trend
There were 10 burglaries in Floreat in 2025, according to WA Police. That is 1.2 per 1,000 residents, under a third of the metropolitan rate of 4.0. Like every suburb figure, it covers homes and businesses together.
Numbers this small are too few to read a trend from. The count was 32 in 2021 and 26 in 2017, and a single year can swing by a handful either way. No motor vehicle thefts were recorded in Floreat in 2025.
Low figures still leave the question of what happens when the house is shut up. Fitted over windows and glass doors, a roller shutter is a physical barrier that makes forced entry slower and noisier.

Floreat homeowners heading off for a while
Mining work accounts for 7.8% of employed Floreat residents, above the 6.6% across Greater Perth. Read it as a proxy for fly-in fly-out rosters only; the census does not ask about them. 15.6% of residents are 65 or over, just under the Greater Perth figure of 15.8%, and 45.7% of homes are owned outright.
When the house is empty, motorised shutters do the opening and closing for you. Set a schedule so they move at fixed times, close the lot from a remote on the way out, and with WiFi control run them from your phone. With hardwired motors, Somfy's Chronis remote has a built-in timer that can hold up to 6 time slots a day. Separately, WA Police holiday advice is to set your alarm and put timers on lights and electronics.
Power cuts are the other question when nobody is home. Somfy's CSI motor for hardwired shutters has a manual override, so the shutter can still be operated when the power is out.

Floreat's houses and our motorised Slidetrack blinds
Floreat's name was chosen by City of Perth Town Clerk WE Bold; it is Latin for "let it flourish" and forms part of the city's coat of arms. The housing is overwhelmingly detached: 89.9% separate houses against 77.8% for Greater Perth, with just 2.7% semi-detached or townhouses and 7.5% flats. Home ownership is 86.2%, against 70.4% across Greater Perth.
That makes residential roller shutters the natural fit here, for bedrooms and the big doors onto the garden. The few owners in a strata scheme should get the strata company's written consent before changing anything visible from outside.
At one Floreat home we installed two motorised Slidetrack blinds with a Basalt frame and 99% Basalt Vistaweave mesh; the project page has the photos. Ziptrak, cafe and motorised blinds are also part of the range. Slidetrack blinds can be paired with Somfy's TaHoma switch and app, which lets you set schedules and run them from a phone, at home or on the move.

When a Floreat home needs Town of Cambridge approval
Most of Floreat is in the Town of Cambridge, with a smaller part in the City of Nedlands. For a single house, the state planning exemption usually covers shutters: no development approval is needed when the R-Codes apply, the works comply with the deemed-to-comply provisions and the house is not heritage protected.
The exceptions are worth checking. Places on the Town's Heritage List need planning approval for demolition and most development works. The Town's exemption policy notes that approval may still be required on land in a heritage area, special control area or bushfire prone area, and that in most cases a building permit is needed before construction starts, even for exempt development. Homes in the Nedlands part of the suburb should check with the City of Nedlands.
Floreat, City Beach and the western suburbs
Floreat sits about 17 km from our Wangara factory in a straight line. Next door in City Beach, 2.5 km away, we installed four motorised Ziptrak blinds (see that project). Wembley is also 2.5 km away, with Subiaco and West Leederville a little further. This page also covers Churchlands and Mount Claremont.
Every outdoor blind is measured on site and then made in our Wangara factory, with the mesh trimmed on a CNC cutting table, the aluminium frame cut to your opening and the motor fitted and tested before delivery. Shutters follow the same path: Ozroll slats cut to size, pelmets and guides built, and each one tested before it leaves the floor.
