Mindarie burglaries have roughly halved in five years
The count is falling. WA Police recorded 35 burglaries in Mindarie in 2021 and 18 in 2025, a drop of about 49%. Go back to 2017, when there were 49, and the fall is larger again.
In 2025 that came to 2.3 burglaries per 1,000 residents, a little over half the metropolitan Perth rate of 4.0. The rate is based on the 2021 Census population of 7,867, and Mindarie is estimated to have grown by 15.1% between 2021 and 2025, so it overstates slightly. The count takes in homes and businesses together. Property damage offences eased too, from 35 in 2021 to 27 in 2025.
A lower count is good news. Shutters remain a practical layer on top of it: a physical barrier on windows and doors that makes forced entry slower and noisier.
Setting a Mindarie home to look lived in
WA Police suggest making it look like someone is home by setting timers for lights, radio or TV. That advice is about lights and electronics, but motorised shutters can keep a routine too. The automatic timer can open them each morning and close them each evening, and WiFi connectivity lets you control them from your smartphone while you are away.
At the 2021 Census, 16.2% of Mindarie residents were 65 or over, slightly above the Greater Perth figure of 15.8%, and the median age was 45. Mining accounted for 6.9% of employed residents, close to the Greater Perth share of 6.6%. The census does not record fly-in fly-out work, so that share is a proxy, not a measure.
Before a longer trip, WA Police also suggest storing valuables and important documents in a safe and letting a trusted person hold spare keys.
Houses, townhouses and strata lots in Mindarie
Separate houses made up 87.4% of Mindarie's occupied dwellings at the 2021 Census. Semi-detached homes and townhouses were another 10.3%, and flats and apartments 2.2%, so a fair share of homes may sit in a strata scheme.
For houses, residential roller shutters on bedrooms and street-facing glass are the natural first step. For a townhouse or apartment in a strata scheme, start with the strata company: under the default by-laws, anything visible from outside the lot that is not in keeping with the building needs its written consent.
Courtyards and outdoor areas can take cafe blinds or a Ziptrak blind, and a larger alfresco can go motorised.

Mindarie fronts the ocean, and the centre of the suburb is only about 0.7 km from the coast. Salt in the air is hard on metal outdoors, so ask about finishes and a simple cleaning routine when we measure.

Building and Energy's retrofit advice for existing homes is to protect windows with metal screens or bushfire shutters, and Ozroll says its roller shutters were tested by the CSIRO against BAL-29 and BAL-40 standards.
Strata consent and council checks in Mindarie
Mindarie is in the City of Wanneroo. A single house can take shutters without development approval when the R-Codes apply, the work is deemed-to-comply and the house is not heritage protected. Mindarie is one of the localities named on the City's Heritage List 2025, so if your property is a listed place, it needs approval first.
Strata lots have extra steps. The default by-laws ask for written notice to the strata company at least 14 days before you alter the structure of a lot, and the strata company can refuse a structural change that would be visible from outside and out of keeping with the development. Landgate points out that strata approval is in addition to any development and building approvals.
With 16.2% of residents aged 65 and over, the WA Seniors Card Safety and Security Rebate is worth knowing about. It covers security window screens or window shutters, up to $400, claimed once per household.
