Dianella's burglaries are down by more than half over five years
Burglaries in Dianella dropped from 116 in 2021 to 46 in 2025, a fall of 60.3%. Go back further and the change is larger again: 296 were recorded in 2017, so 2025 sits 84.5% lower.
Those 46 burglaries come to 1.9 per 1,000 residents, under half the metropolitan figure of 4.0. Each suburb total from WA Police covers homes and businesses together. Motor vehicle thefts eased over the same five years, from 22 to 12.
A low rate still is not zero. Roller shutters give windows and doors a physical barrier, and they make forced entry slower and noisier. Treat them as one layer alongside the deadlocks, key locked windows and sensor lights on the WA Police home security checklist.

Shutters that close themselves while a Dianella home sits empty
At the 2021 Census, 21.5% of Dianella residents were 65 or older, compared with 15.8% across Greater Perth. Mining employed 4.0% of working residents, below the Greater Perth figure of 6.6%. As the census does not ask about fly-in fly-out work, read the mining number as a loose proxy.
Automatic scheduling is the useful feature for an empty house. You set the shutters to open and close at chosen times each day, so the house keeps a daily routine of its own. WiFi control adds the option to override them from your phone, wherever you are. The WA Police holiday flyer advises putting lights and electronics on timers, and the WA Police burglary flyer suggests keeping valuables out of sight from windows.
Closed shutters also keep the sun off the glass. The WA Seniors Card rebate guide notes that window shutters bring benefits beyond security, including saving on energy costs and sunlight control.

From late 1950s houses to Dianella townhouses
According to Landgate, the Dianella area began developing in the late 1950s, and the name was adopted in 1958. It is the botanical name of a small purple flowered plant that once grew there in profusion.
Separate houses now make up 71.5% of occupied dwellings, a little under the Greater Perth figure of 77.8%. Semi-detached, terrace and townhouses account for 24.4%, and flats 4.1%. Home ownership is 72.6%, slightly above 70.4% for Greater Perth, and the median age is 43. That mix suits residential roller shutters on bedrooms, living areas and sliding doors, built with Ozroll aluminium slats that we cut to size in Wangara.
Outside, motorised outdoor blinds can carry sun and wind sensors that adjust them as the weather changes. We also make Ziptrak, Slidetrack and cafe blinds.
Our range

Living near the two major traffic routes in Dianella
Two roads in Dianella are mapped as strategic freight or major traffic routes under the state's road and rail noise policy: Alexander Drive and Reid Highway. If your house backs onto or faces either of them, tell us when we come to measure, and we can plan the shutters for that side of the house first.

Do Dianella shutters need City of Stirling approval?
For the 24.4% of Dianella homes that are townhouses, the first approval is usually the strata company's. Under the default strata by-laws, an owner needs written consent to keep anything visible from outside the lot that does not match the rest of the building. Raise it with your strata company early.
Almost all of Dianella is in the City of Stirling. A separate house there can generally take shutters without development approval, provided three state conditions are met: the R-Codes apply to the work, it is deemed-to-comply, and the property is not heritage protected.
That last condition matters because Dianella has places on the City of Stirling Heritage List, and the City assesses development to listed properties on its merits given their listing. Seniors Card members may also be able to claim the WA Seniors Card Safety and Security Rebate, which names window shutters as an eligible item and pays up to $400 per household.

Questions about roller shutters in Dianella
How have burglaries in Dianella changed?
They have fallen. WA Police counted 296 in 2017, 116 in 2021 and 46 in 2025. The 2025 rate was 1.9 per 1,000 residents, against 4.0 for metropolitan Perth.
My Dianella townhouse is strata titled. What do I need?
The strata company's written consent, under the default by-laws, for anything visible from outside your lot that is not in keeping with the building. Council or building approvals, if needed, are separate.
Is a Dianella home on the Heritage List exempt from approval?
No. The single house exemption does not apply to heritage protected places, and the City of Stirling assesses applications for listed properties on their merits.
Can my Dianella shutters run on a schedule while I travel?
Yes. Motorised shutters can open and close at set times each day, and with WiFi you can control them from your phone while away.
