Palmyra burglaries over five years: little changed
In 2025 WA Police recorded 36 burglaries in Palmyra. The 2021 count was 38, so across five years the figure is little changed. 2024 was a quieter year with 21, and 2025 returned to about the 2021 level rather than moving past it.
That gives a 2025 rate of 4.8 burglaries per 1,000 residents, above the metro rate of 4.0. The figure combines homes and businesses. Over a longer run the count has come down: there were 70 in 2017.
No product takes the risk away. What a roller shutter does is put a physical barrier on windows and doors and make forced entry slower and noisier, which makes it a practical layer on top of locks and an alarm.

Time away from a Palmyra home
The 2021 Census put Palmyra's median age at 39. Residents aged 65 or over were 16.8% of the population, a little above the Greater Perth share of 15.8%, and 5.3% of employed residents worked in mining, below the Greater Perth figure of 6.6%. The census does not record fly-in fly-out work, so the mining share is a proxy at best.
Whatever takes you away, shutters can be part of closing up. Lower the lot with a remote as you leave. With WiFi you can operate them from your smartphone while you are gone, and scheduling lets them open and close at set times. Separately, WA Police advise keeping valuables out of sight from windows.
If you have motorised outdoor blinds as well, set them before you go. Ziptrak advises supervising motorised track-guided blinds while they move, because strong wind pressing on the fabric can affect how they run.

Shutters for Palmyra townhouses, houses and shops
According to the City of Melville's suburb history, the majority of the district was developed between 1901 and 1919, and Landgate records that its name was picked through a competition run by the Melville Road Board. The 2021 Census counted 57.1% of occupied dwellings as separate houses, against 77.8% for Greater Perth, and 37.1% as semi-detached homes, terraces or townhouses.
That 37.1% is the key number for many Palmyra owners. If your home is strata titled, the default by-laws require written consent from the strata company before you keep anything visible from outside the lot that is not in keeping with the rest of the building. Landgate adds that this consent is in addition to any development or building approval.
For separate houses, residential roller shutters on bedrooms and living areas are the place to start. Commercial and industrial land takes up 22.6% of Palmyra, and for shops and workshops we make commercial roller shutters. Outdoor blinds round things out: 4.4 km away in Hamilton Hill we fitted a manual Ziptrak blind with a white frame and 99% Ebony mesh, shown on the project page.

Freight and traffic routes around Palmyra
Four roads through or along Palmyra are mapped under the state's road and rail noise policy as strategic freight or major traffic routes: Carrington Street, Stock Road, Leach Highway and Canning Highway. If your bedrooms face one of them, point it out when we measure.

Palmyra houses, shopfronts and council approval
For a house, the starting point is the state exemption. No development approval is needed for works to a single house if the R-Codes apply, the works are deemed-to-comply and the place is not heritage protected. The City of Melville adds, in LPP 1.17, that residential development meeting the deemed-to-comply provisions needs no planning approval unless heritage is involved, and its heritage page says every development on a locally listed property needs approval.
Shopfronts fall under LPP 2.1, the City's Non-Residential Development policy. It does not support removing or permanently covering windows and openings in a shop front. Where security shutters face the public domain they must be visually permeable, solid ones will not be supported, and roller doors need to be at least 75% visually permeable.
If you hold a Seniors Card, the WA Safety and Security Rebate covers security window screens or window shutters, up to $400 per household.
