Kalamunda burglaries have eased
WA Police recorded 20 burglaries in Kalamunda in 2025. With 7,163 residents at the last census, that is a rate of 2.8 per 1,000, below the metropolitan figure of 4.0.
The longer view is downward. The count was 80 in 2017, 28 in 2021 and 20 in 2025, so across the five years from 2021 it is down by about 29%, and the 2025 figure is a quarter of the 2017 one. There was a bump to 66 in 2023 before the numbers fell again.
A low rate is still not zero. Roller shutters add a physical barrier on windows and doors that makes forced entry slower and noisier, and they sit alongside the deadlocks, sensor lights and alarm that WA Police suggest.

Leaving a Kalamunda home with the shutters down
More than a quarter of Kalamunda residents, 28.6%, are 65 or older, far above the Greater Perth share of 15.8%, and the median age is 49. Mining employs 6.9% of working residents, close to the Greater Perth figure of 6.6%. The census does not ask about fly-in fly-out work, so the mining share is a proxy only.
For longer trips, shutters on a remote mean closing up the house is one button rather than a lap of every window. A timer can open them in the morning and close them at dusk, in the spirit of the WA Police holiday advice to set timers for lights and electronics, and a WiFi hub puts the same controls on your phone.
If you would rather not depend on mains power, Ozroll's E-Series battery drive is a low voltage system that is not reliant upon it, and the hardwired CSI motor has a manual override for when the power is off. Ozroll notes that the portable E-Port controller used with the battery drive does not lend itself to timer automation, so tell us which matters more to you.

Shutters for Kalamunda homes
Kalamunda is overwhelmingly a suburb of separate houses: 89.3% of occupied dwellings, with semi-detached homes and townhouses at 9.3% and flats at 1.3%. Ownership is high as well, at 83.0%, and 49.1% of homes are owned outright.
That makes residential roller shutters the usual choice, starting with bedrooms and living areas, then the windows that cop the afternoon sun. Each one is cut and assembled in Wangara to the measurements we take on site, and we offer a 10-year warranty on roller shutters.
Verandas and decks can be closed in with outdoor blinds, from Ziptrak and Slidetrack to cafe and motorised blinds.

Bush fire prone land in Kalamunda
The state map of bush fire prone areas, in effect from 13 December 2025, designates 94.9% of Kalamunda. Even the name points to the bush: residents chose it from two Aboriginal words recorded by Bishop Salvado, 'cala' for home or settlement and 'munda' for forest or bush.
Building and Energy's advice for retrofitting existing homes, for sites up to BAL-29, is to protect windows with metal screens or bushfire shutters. Ozroll states that its roller shutters have been tested by the CSIRO against BAL-29 and BAL-40 standards, and adds that the details of each application should be considered for compliance. If you have a bushfire attack level assessment for your block, have it handy when we measure.

Seniors rebate and planning approval in Kalamunda
Start with the rebate, because Kalamunda's age profile makes it relevant to many households. WA Seniors Card members can claim up to $400 per household through the Safety and Security Rebate, and security window screens or window shutters are on the eligible list, with a minimum purchase of $100. The rebate can be claimed once over the life of the scheme.
On approvals, the City of Kalamunda's only designated heritage area is an avenue of lemon scented gums in Wattle Grove, so in Kalamunda itself the state rules set the test. A single house is exempt from development approval when the R-Codes apply, the work meets the deemed-to-comply provisions and the home is not heritage protected.
Bushfire adds one condition. On bush fire prone land, development approval can be needed where the site is rated BAL-40 or BAL-FZ, whatever the usual exemptions say.
